Mount Work October 23, 2012

October 23, 2012: Mount Work

Car poolers will be leaving the centre at 9:15, and leaving the Gowlland Tod Car Park (Ross Durrance Road) to start the hike at 9:45. We will be leaving a car at the Munn Road Car park so that we don't have to complete the full loop back to the Ross Durrance described in Dwayne's two recons. Chris and I found the full loop hike challenging but exhilarating, but by just doing the ascent to Mount Work from Ross Durrance and the descent to Munn Road this should be still challenging but doable.

Here is the MotionX map and details of the recon Chris and I did. Our actual elapsed time was 3:30 but this included the full loop back to Ross Durrance.

Mt Work Hike - Report from Dwayne's two recons
Recon: Thursday,  November 24, 2011
Starting from the Ross- Durrance Rd parking lot, take the trail behind the information sign to the summit. There will be quite a few false summits and side trails before the peak. The views from these are not very good, so stay on the main trail to the summit. The true summit is a rock knob with a wood “SUMMIT” sign on it. The summit takes 1:02 from the parking lot.

The best views are just past the summit, on the south side. Some views are almost 180 degrees. The trek down to the Munns Road parking lot takes a total of 1:49. Descent time from the summit to Munns Rd parking lot was 0:48.

The first time I decided to return via Munns Rd and Millstream Lake Rd/Ross- Durrance Rd. Distance to the intersection of Munns Rd and Millstream Lake Rd is 2.1 km and took 0:25. Total distance from the Munns Rd parking lot to the Ross- Durrance Rd parking lot was 8.0km and took 1:35. Total time for the round trip was 3:23.

Recon: Saturday, November 26, 2011-11-26
I returned to the Munns Rd parking lot and backtracked on the trail to the summit in order to find access to Corry Rd. The reason was to find a new loop route that was shorter than taking the road back. Time to backtrack to the first short single bridge was 0:12. I took the route to the right (if you were coming from the summit) and came upon an abandoned Austin truck at 0:21. Just past the truck is a fork in the trail and a boulder inscribed with a tribute to the Ralph Barer family. If you keep left here (go straight ahead) you will end up at Munns Rd just past the Munns Rd parking lot. This will take 0:34. YOU HAVE GONE THE WRONG WAY AT THE ROCK!

This is the first short bridge when coming down from the summit toward Munns Rd. There is a large stump at the north end of the bridge. As you are coming down the hill, take the route to the right for Corry Rd. The route to the left goes to Munns Rd. The trail wil have a few deadfalls, but  after 0:11 you should reach the monument rock.

From the monument boulder, keep right (right turn).  At 0:28 (from Munns Rd parking lot) you will come to a fork in the rail, keep left, but the two trails converge.   At 0:32 you will pass a private gate on the left, with two old water tanks as gate posts. There is another tribute rock, on the left, just past this gate, but it may not be noticed when heading toward Ross- Durrance Rd because of the way the rock faces.  Keep going as the trail turns into a road, past two residences, and ends up at Ross-Durrance Rd at 0:44.
This is the old route of Corry Rd and comes out to Ross-Durrance Road 2.4 km south of the Ross-Durrance Rd parking lot. It comes out at 301 Ross-Durrance Rd.  Allow 0:30 to walk back to the parking lot. Total time for the loop is about 2:40. This is considerably shorter than taking the road from Munns to Ross- Durrance, which took 3:23.
